Solvin’ them Transparent-PNG blues

Here’s a handy little utility to help you get the most from your transparent PNGs in website design:

http://entropymine.com/jason/tweakpng/

If you’re using Joomla, the excellent CorrectPNG plugin will get you only so far. For the rest, remove the gAMA channels from the affected files, and you should be right as rain in all browsers, including the incorrigible Internet Exploiter.

Joomla 1.0.13 Released

The Joomla team today released version 1.0.13 “Sunglow”, which corrects multiple bugs, as well as several minor security issues.

My favorite bug fix: The “immediate admin logout after login” issue. Good work team!

Meanwhile, I see the project has released an Alpha for 1.5. Things are looking good!

Packt Publishing recently announced details for their 2007 Open Source Content Management System award, adding categories and widening the level of participation, so that the prize money is distributed across a wider array of projects.

Webhost Review: LunarPages

I’ve had to use LunarPages for work on a client site, and I must say, they’re just not up-to-snuff.

They’re clearly overselling bandwidth: One need look no further than their absurd storage and bandwidth “allowances” to see that they’re advertising a sizable percentage of total bandwidth available on the entire planet.

More than that, I’ve been getting cut off from one of their shared-hosting servers all day long. I’ve come across multiple “Lunarpages Sucks” type sites, and it basically looks like their servers and/or backbone have been browning-out all day long.

Of course, they don’t allow users to get to the server console via SSH and get a look for themselves as to how over-taxed their server is. Which is a major red-flag, in my view.

So, note to those who would be enticed by unrealistically high storage and bandwidth promises. It’s probably a lot of hot air.

I know at my website hosting business, I strive to maintain the highest standards and levels of accessibility in regards to my clients’ sites. It’s a shame that there are always hosting businesses quick to overpromise and underdeliver. It hurts the rest of us.
